My last blog

I will remember most about my forth grader year is the wax museum, read aloud, Mrs. Gerard, Mrs. Zwicker, and my class mates.  I’ll remember my class mates because of their characteristics. I will remember about Mrs. Gerard’s read aloud books because she is a good reader. I will remember about Mrs. Zwicker because she is a very good helper. I will remember about the wax museum because  of all of the hard work paid off.
The part I’ll remember most that I  accomplished is the earth day project. Why? Because it was a lot of hard work researching and practicing on the poem. I will also remember about the wax museum work that we had to do. Why? Because I could not find his picture. But I found a lot of research about him.

The things I’ll look forward to middle school is the cafeteria. Why? Because you can pick what ever you want. Another thing that I’ll look forward to middle school is band. Why? Because there are lots of instruments to play. For example percussion, flute, and violin.

what was it like for my famous NH studying

I feel that studying Levi Hutchins was hard and interesting. I think the part that I’ll remember the most is that he made the first American alarm clock. The most difficult part was making the portrait and dressing up as him because I could not find a picture of him. I think the part that I’m most proud of was the biography.

Levi Hutchins Biography

LEVI HUTCHINS
by
Gabri-el Collins

Do you know who wakes you up in the morning? That’s right, the alarm clock. I bet your guessing who invented the alarm clock. Well I know, and his name is Levi Hutchins. I’m going to tell you all about him.
Levi was born in Harvard, Massachusetts on August 17th, 1761. His brother Abel was born two years later in March. When Levi was 14 he played the fife in the American Revolution and his father (the captain) feared for Levi’s safety. His father forced Levi to stay on high ground in Medford. After war, Levi was placed in school. After Levi was done with school, he worked in the watch repair trade with his brother Abel under a master. The master’s name was Simon Willard. This was his childhood. I guess you’re thinking this is pretty interesting, but the next part is better.
As he got older, he had a big huge family. So let’s jump right in. On February 23rd, 1789, Levi married Phoebe Hannaford. After marriage, Phoebe had ten children and before Levi passed away, he made clocks for each of his children. Levi died peacefully at the age of 93, on June 13th in Concord, New Hampshire. The death is sad isn’t it? Well, we should move on and see what’s next.
This part of my report is about Levi’s career. Career means job, but we should move on into it. He and his brother lived together and bought a farm that had 70 acres. They started to make clocks there. Levi also made cloth. Levi and his brother Abel made clocks for 20 years. He and his brother also had a factory together, but on Tuesday, November 25, 1817 the factory burned to the ground. Two years later, the factory was built into the Phoenix hotel. I wonder how the building burned down. Well let’s go into the exiting part.

This was very exciting for Levi, but there’s a little problem. Levi invented the first American alarm clock in 1787. But the European alarm clock predated his, so he was not the first to invent the alarm clock. He and his brother made the clocks behind their house in their store. They set up a shop on Main Street in Concord, New Hampshire.  Also, he was a teacher at the school he was placed in after the war. Do you know why he invented the alarm clock? Because he always slept past 4:00. People still speak of him today because Levi was successful in business and with his invention. I hope you learned a lot about Levi Hutchins.

Reuse & recycle aluminum cans & plastic bottles

Americans buy plastic bottles and canned food that’s worth money in other countries. But you don’t know how it destroys the environment. In 2009, the plastic bottle recycling rate reached a record high of 2.5 billion pounds, or 28% of all plastic bottles consumed in the United States. Guess what?! In 2009 almost 30 million tons of plastic were generated in the United States, and only around two million tons were recovered. If you tied a rope to all the aluminum cans recycled in 2010 end to end, they could circle the earth 169 times. Did you know that the aluminum cans recycled in 2010 (stacked one on top of the other) would be 1,454 times taller than the Empire State building? From 1972-to-2003, we threw away over one trillion aluminum cans- enough to reach around the earth 3,048 times. Those are facts that are tragic, but were just getting started.

Why should we recycle and reuse plastic bottles & aluminum cans? Here’s why. You should recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans because there’s not a lot of landfill space left. When a ton of plastic bottles are recycled, about 3.8 barrels of petroleum is saved.  Also, 50 percent of steel is being recycled right now, but WE CAN DO BETTER. Recycling steel and tin cans saves about 60 and 74 percent of the energy used to make them. Plus, recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run your TV for three straight hours. Those are just little foot prints on the Earth, but we can do better.

Here are some examples of how you can help. You can use a reusable water bottle. Make tin cans into art (like statues). You can also make plastic bottles into pots for plants. You can get a recycling bin. You can also ask for a tour of the recycling station, and reuse tin cans for pencil holders. Those are some things you can do, but I have more.

At this point were going to get specific, like let’s say, directions. One thing I plan to do & you can do as well to reduce the amount of plastic bottles is make them into a bowl for ice cream. All you have to do is ask your mom or dad to help to cut the plastic bottle. Then you can decorate it. Another thing I can do and you as well is grab a tin can and permanent marker and draw a design on the can. Then ask your mom or dad to help punch the holes in the can. To punch the holes you just need to take a hammer and a nail, then just hammer the nail on the line, then just take it out. Do this on the line until you come back to the beginning. Put a light in and it will light up the night. These ideas can reduce the amount of landfill trash.

It matters that you reuse and recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans because it takes a lot of bad gases and energy to produce them. Why should you care? Because the bad gases can kill animals and even us. They also use a lot of energy to make them and someday we’ll all run out. If people don’t stop this, it could make landfill space run out and then this world will look terrible. To stop all of this, you just have to remember the three words: Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle.

#1 post

Hello there, my name is Gabri-el, I’m in fourth grade, I’m ten years old, and my class is room 8. My hobby is art. My favorite types of art is Sumie and working with clay. Sumie is a Japanese type of art that uses ink and a bamboo brush. You can jest use black paint instead of ink.
This blog is too update you on school activities. For writing time, we do poetry. We’ve learned to write Haikus, Cinquains, and Metaphor’s/Similes. For math we’ve learned decimals, long division, multi digit multiplication, and fractions.
Check back every time because there might be something new.
